What is Feminism and Why is it Important - EstheraSTEM

Feminism is the movement to Put an end to sexist exploitation and oppression to achieve gender equality. It is also the advocacy of women's rights to achieve equality since its all about giving all people equal rights and opportunities. Feminism is a positive movement that continues to bring beneficial social change to society.

A Common Misconception of Feminism is that only women can be feminists. It is absolutely wrong because Feminism does not only benefit only women. Advocacy for equal rights of other sexes and identities e.g LGBTQ+ are included in feminist campaigns

Why is Feminism Important?

1. Women Empowerment

"Feminism is the notion that all humans are equal regardless of their gender. Feminism is uplifting women so that men and women are treated equally. It’s not about demeaning men or declaring them inferior. It’s not based on women having power over men; rather, the idea is that women should have power over themselves."
-Drafted from Youth ki Awaaz

2. Advocacy for Gender Equality of all Sexes

Feminism foster a society that does not associate activities, clothes or any distinctions with any gender paving way for Gender Equality. It also serves as an outlet for turning gender equality concerns into cultural change with feminist support.

3. Fight against Sexism

Sexism means perceiving and judging people only on the basis of their belonging to a particular sex or gender. It is the discrimination of a person based on their sex. It is important to note that sexism applies to both men and women, however, women are more affected by sexism than men in all areas of life. Hence, Feminism recognizes minority groups who experience sexism since it is a movement to put an end to sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.
